If you are planning to come to Thailand, you should book your hotel or motel before you arrive.
Hotels and resorts will charge you more if you walk-in so you have more flexibility and options if you book beforehand.
Thailand is flexible and depending on the season you can find rooms in person but you would be unable to view all of the options as easily as you can online prior to arrival.
It is best to be prepared and make your booking well in advance especially when traveling to bigger destinations such as Phuket and when seeking to travel during the busy season (during November to February) since most hotels may be fully booked especially during Christmas.
There are many options to book online and I recommend the following in various budget ranges:
Crown Lanta Resort & Spa is a 4-star hotel resort with nice rooms, beautiful pool, and a private beach. The rates are approximately US$100 per night.
Tara Place is a 2-star hotel with free wi-fi, lovely rooms a fab Jacuzzi and a rooftop pool.
All for approximately US$50 per night.
Casa de Lua hotel is very reasonable at approximately US$25 per night (850 baht. It offers extremely good service from the young couple. You can order delivery from the local restaurant where the food is very good. Note: No ramps only steps, making this inaccessible for wheelchair users.
